Chapter 7: Planning and Developing Technology-Rich Instruction

What is Data Driven Decision Making?

Data-driven decisions are based on an understanding of a wide collection of data, from student test scores to enrollment figures. Teachers and school leaders are letting data play a bigger role in how we plan classroom lessons and tests. Studying data helps educators know what methods and practices work and on what they need to focus addtitional attention. The text gives the following example, if 35 percent of fourth-graders failed the end of the year writing test, then fifth-grade teachers can use these data to guide their teaching during the next year. This type of data-informed thought also helps schools and districts demonstrate accountability with new federal regulations on reporting spelled out in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

  1. The text did provide a good example for the use of data-driven decision making in the classroom. This question reminded me of the MTTS spreadsheet that we analyzed a few weeks ago. The instructional decisions made were also based on the data presented. Data can be very beneficial in providing feedback so teachers can make adjustments if necessary.
