What privacy issues must be considered when communicating electronically?
You must always remember that when you give information voluntarily that that information is often sold to marketing companies who will then start sending loads of junk mail. You have to consider what information is necessary to give away and which to hold back. With the number of students on the internet communicating with their friends increasing everyday, safety and privacy issues become serious concerns for educators and parents. In April of 2000 Congress passed the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act which established rules to safeguard children's privacy online. Privacy on the internet is one reason that some of my children are not allowed online without me sitting right next to them. If they cannot understand how to protect personal information online, they can't be online without me. It is hard to teach children this concept especially with sites like facebook, where they are encouraged to socialize. My teenager has been told, only accept people you know from school and even then I monitor his page and friends list. It really can become an issue but teaching students how to protect their privacy and personal information can help.
ReplyDeleteSafety and privacy are always a worry of mine when I am on the internet. I try not to give away too much information, especially on social networking sites. It seems that children and teenagers are either unaware of the risks or do not worry about what will happen when they post everything online. While I think it is good that the government has issued laws regarding children's saftey on the internet, I still believe that parents need to supervise their children when they are using the internet.
ReplyDeleteEmail privacy is a big issue. I get tons of junk mail all the time. I am glad for email filters, but it is still annoying. People need to be very careful when giving out information online. One thing I found very helpful was that secure sites have the "s" after "http" in a web address. I never knew this until just a year or two ago. Good thing to know.

ReplyDeleteGood points about e-mail privacy. It is unfortunate that some companies sell e-mail addresses to other companies. You have to be very careful who you give your e-mail address to.
ReplyDeletePrivacy online is important for so many reasons but the top priority to protect children from seeing and being involved in inappropriate activities. It is also essential to us as teachers because we must keep our personal lives offline in order to stay professional!
