Chapter 14: Producing and Presenting, Including Podcasting and Digital Storytelling

What role can digital storytelling play in education?

Digital storytelling helps students explore the meaning of their own experience, give value to it, and communicate that experience on multiple levels to others. The stories can vary between many different story lines. They can be about people, places, things and happenings. Teachers can use digital storytelling to make abstract concepts real to their students. You can also use photostory telling which uses photos as a basis for the story. Teachers use digital storytelling to promote development of lifelong learners but also lifelong communicators. Below is a great website that I took from the text that is a great starting point for digital storytelling.

    Thanks for the great website, it really is a great place to get ideas and step by step directions. I think this is a great idea and students will benefit from being able to express their point of view or perhaps changing a part of a storie they didn't like into one they enjoy.

    I think it is amazing how different students interpret stories. Students come to school with different experiences and different background knowledge, digital storytelling is a great way for students to share their experiences with each other.

    I agree that storytelling promotes life long learning. It is such a creative way to express yourself. I think it also promotes diversity as students can showcase themselves in a variety of ways.

    Digital stories are definitely a wonderful way for students to communicate in a new and interesting way. It helps them to learn the skills necessary to become technologically fluent and will aid them later on in life.

    I love how you said it will help students develop to be lifelong communicators. It is important for students to learn and for teachers to understand that is crucial for students to not just be in the classroom, but be a part of the classroom. Students need to know how to communicate and express their emotions and thoughts and particular subjects; digital storytelling is a great conduit to do so.
